Winning competition for a mixed-use development in Taiping, China. The project includes a boutique hotel, residential apartments, offices, retail areas, green public spaces, and parking facilities.
Situated on a forested hillside approximately 30 kilometers from Kunming, the project aims to establish a strong and direct connection with the surrounding nature. Inspired by the terraced landscapes of traditional Chinese rice fields, the design is conceived as a composition of layered topographies applied both to the site and to the architectural configuration. This stratified landscape becomes the base for a cluster of timber buildings with elliptical forms that blend harmoniously with their environment.
Vernacular Chinese architecture influenced the façade concept, particularly through the use of wood. The elliptical geometry creates floor-by-floor rings that vary according to orientation and program, while bamboo elements on residential balconies echo the natural context. Green rooftops further strengthen the dialogue with the forest, offering expansive views over the surrounding landscape.
